Reflections

gazing, searching, hoping
i look for me in the ripples –
in the mirror, in the eyes
always outside, not inside.

the face reflected unknown
the emotions felt unreal
my past appears a mirage
hazy and smoky, surreal

where did the years go?
who is this stranger?
what became of me?
will my past catch up?
how can i escape?
empty questions,
no answers

“look deeply, turn inward
clean the dirt from mind-mirrored
the me you lost can be found”
voice this wise, i ignored
fool that i was, searched outward

gazing, searching, hoping
i look for me in the ripples –
in the mirror, in the eyes
but always outside, not inside.

*****

In response to the prompt from TOP,
'surreal', I think this fits last weeks
prompt on 'mirrors and smokes' too.

This really resonates with me, beautiful, a bit sad, and utterly universal.

I could see myself standing in front of a mirror doing this -- and I love the description of loss and the use of ripples...well done.

Stunningly candid! I found myself breathless ... wondering how you had gotten into my head. :o)

Hi UL. On the subject about mirrors and reflections,..... I've tagged you on that very same subject (that's how I look at it, that is).

Not sure if you are into tags, but if you are,... the "mission" is set out in my post at >> http://spillay.wordpress.com/2008/03/20/looking-at-you-and-seeing-myself/

Anyway,...if you do choose to do it,.. have fun!!

Happy Easter!! Eat lots of choc bunnies!!

UL, Wow! This is one of your finest poems I've read. Every word fit, in both sound and meaning. The feelings expressed in the poem reflect what I'm going through in my life– you helped me see these transition years in a new way. Beautiful!

Surreal, smoke and mirrors. A lovely poem. It's so easy to lose 'us' somewhere along the way.

I like the part with the voice speaking. That resonates with me. Sometimes we know what we should do but we don't do it anyway, and then we fall to pieces when he didn't have to. This poem reminded me of those times in my life.
