Weapon

words like whiplash
scrapes and bruises
the soul deep within.
silence so cold adds
insult to injury, reopening
unhealed wounds.
time patches the burns
and pretend to heal
exposed cuts caught by
the naked eye, but –
who provides balm
for the gash inside?
'think before you speak',
so common an advice -
one in need of repetition,
for words uttered
in terrible haste
spreads like plague
leaving death to trail!

So true. Words spread like wildfire. Did you hear about ....perhaps I'd better not!

Beautifully captured. Words can injure deeply. so many ramble without thinking. How often was my heart bleeding when looking after the wounds of my children being attacked by words. Luckily you get stronger when you are older.

Words are like salt on a wound now aren't they. Great advice in this piece UL people should think before they speak could save a lot of harsh feelings towards one another.

We all need the reminder at times. Love the words "and pretend to heal"
and "leaving death to trail".

I guess the pen really is mightier than the sword. Our words, spoken or written, can be very powerful. Now if only we can use them correctly!

I think of more than a few times when people said things to me that I will never forget, both positive words and negative ones.

UL,
We, who cherish words, know better than most the power they hold to affect the receivers's psyche.
Think before utterance; great advice, worth repeating as you've so aptly reminded us here.

Ahh, yes. The truths in here are themselves barbs.

I really like "Who provides balm/for the gash inside?" -- so true. So very true.

would that we all gave this consideration with care & frequency...my worst sins have been verbal & your words say it so eloquently.

"who provides balm for the gash inside?" excellently described....for we all carry gashes inside received at the hands of others, yet in time, no longer visible but felt inside....

beautiful...
