The Kiss.

May 1995

It is precious,
It is priceless

It makes me secure
It makes me whole

A kiss on the forehead,
Feels so special,
I long for more.

He gave me a kiss every time he said goodbye. It replaced the silent “I love you” that implicitly came with it. There was never a need for words between us. I took it for granted, didn’t realize its worth until I almost lost it.

I still remember the day like yesterday, it was soon after my wedding, and I was bidding farewell to fly back to Boston. He shook my hand, squeezed it and said goodbye. “Where is the kiss?” my eyes questioned, but pride kept me from asking aloud.

“Do I not deserve it anymore? I should’ve asked for it, demanded it, there’s no room for pride between us surely?” But I didn’t. And I regretted the decision instantly, by then it was too late. Three years later, after a very long wait, we got to see each other again. This time I was determined. He is not going to leave before I get a kiss. As he took my hand to bid goodbye, I asked

“Achan*, can I get a kiss like old days? "

Amma* was there; needless to say we were all teary eyed and one of the most precious moments of my life.

It felt precious,
It felt priceless,

Made me secure
Made me whole

A kiss on the forehead
Felt so special and more.
***********
The incident taught me an important lesson. Never create a moment for regret, life is too short for pride and the negatives. Cherish the moments with your loved ones, else one might have regrets forever. One may not get lucky to make amends all the time!
*I call my Dad, Achan...and mom, Amma*

The most important thing out here is that there is a realization that there should be no moments of regret...

What a beautiful post and what a wonderful lesson. It's so easy to take things for granted or to let a moment pass by, yet so senseless.

It's true we can't go backward and fix things but here it worked out.

What if tomorrow never comes.

Do it now, say it now.

I wish I could have done this, I wish I could have done that.

No regrets just lessons learned.

This piece is a great reminder.

It is very touching, I feel a lump in my throat reading it.

I wish you well.

A beautifully crafted way to pass on such an important reminder.

beautifully expressed. I also wondered why he stopped giving you the kiss. Was it perhaps because you were a married woman and he thought you were too grown up?

Oh, UL, that's wonderful. So true -- and such a nice twist. I was expecting the kisser to be a boyfriend, a husband. Not Mom and Dad. Yet that's what makes this so special and important. We remember to kiss our spouses. But our parents?

Not so much.

I was glad to know that you rectified that mistake... the ending scared me until then :)

I think that too often, we all take people for granted... or at least the things they do. But when you realize what you're missing out on, or what you've lost, making it up is wonderful.

Beautiful post.
