Wings Soar High

This morning I chased a butterfly,
Into the paddy field nearby.

I saw her rest,
Amongst the wide harvest.
Seemed a jewel at the summer fest.

Her wings glitter, oh what color?
A second more, I was on her.
Reds and gold, my heart thundered,
Almost mine, caged and captured.

Not so fast, she replied,
Dream on bud, I was surprised.
I am free, not yours to capture.
Let me be, just a pleasure.

I hesitated, almost convinced,
Unknowingly tricked, later realized.
The sunny rays had taken her side
Made me blind and let her hide.

Disappointed, I walked on by,
I pondered, she soared high.
Stopped, spell bound,
I caught her flight.
The thought occurred,
She was right.
What a pleasure,
What a sight.
Glad I didn’t capture
Such delight!

Like dreams you can never capture butterflies

they are so beautiful,, and their life expectancy so short,, i cannot help but wonder why collectors cannot collect the dead,, instead of kill the living...

Love this! The descriptive words, the chase and final realization - all great!

how can butterflies be so pretty yet moths so hideous?
There's a moth epidemic here or so it seems!

Thanks for sharing your poem : )

Very well done......I have a terrible phobia about butterflies (a long story of childhood horror) but I could see the beauty in this nonetheless (SMILE).

How wonderful to read this!

ul, thanks for the poem. liked the mixture of formal/informal language; rhyme and false rhyme - seems like you had fun writing it. glad you let the butterfly be...

I don't know why I feel so strongly about this, but jujee's comment causes me to spring to the moths' defense. though they cause a lot of damage, moths are actually quite beautiful. check out google images, and type moths into the search field, and you'll see what I mean. and, "like a moth to a flame," is one of the great, albeit cliched, images of all time. hope you're not plague ridden by the winged creatures down under. food for the birds, but guard your woolies.

Jo, would love to hear the butterfly phobia story.

Your poem was shear fun to read and I am so happy you let the butterfly be. I enjoyed this poem so much. Keep up the good work.

Jo, I would also like to know your butterfly phobia.

Have a nice day.

Your poem painted a really clear picture of the hunt, the capture, and the loss. I enjoyed your poem.
